Germany seeks stronger ties

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder have called for further development of bilateral ties, as well as relations between China and Europe.

The German leader arrived in Beijing on Monday for a visit expected to add new momentum to trade and political ties.

Schroeder kicked off his sixth visit to Beijing with talks with the Chinese premier in the Great Hall of the People.


The two leaders exchanged views on important international issues of common concern. They also discussed how to deepen bilateral relations as well as ties between China and Europe.

Both Wen and Schroeder made positive remarks about the rapid and comprehensive development of Sino-German ties in recent years. They said the two countries have developed a wide consensus on issues concerning world peace and development.

Premier Wen said China views Sino-German ties from a long-term, strategic perspective. He made several proposals on how to carry forward their strategic partnership.

He said China supports Germany in playing a bigger role in international affairs and hopes to deepen their cooperation in various fields, including trade, energy, education and culture.

The premier also underlined the importance of respecting cultural diversity and encouraging dialogue on an equal footing.

After the talks, the two sides signed an agreement on establishing a hotline between leaders. They also signed a memorandum of understanding on boosting close cooperation between small and medium-sized enterprises in both countries.
