German Chancellor visits China

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder begins a three-day official visit to China today, his sixth visit to the country.

Ahead of his arrival, Schroeder said he hopes to further the two-way strategic partnership. And he said his government would continue to strive for a consensus among European Union members to lift weapons sanctions against China.

Schroeder will meet senior Chinese leaders to discuss cooperation in trade, the environment and energy.
