Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao told students that Chinese and American young people should join closely together to promote peace and stability in the world. He gave a speech at Harvard University in Boston on Wednesday.

The Chinese premier is on the final leg of his four day official visit to the United States. During his speech, Wen briefed the audience on China's ancient civilization, its current reform and opening-up, and its ambitious plans for the future.

The Chinese premier said that in order to better understand the future one must look to the past. He said China is one of the oldest civilizations in the world and Chinese culture boasts a 5,000-year old history with a strong vitality. He said the civilizations of different nations are all fruits of human wisdom and have contributed to human progress. He said China would seek common ground in the spirit of equality and tolerance, carry on extensive dialogue with different cultures and promote closer cultural exchanges.

The Chinese premier said that mankind is confronted with more complicated economic and social problems in the 21st century, and that cultural elements will take on a more important role. He appealed to young people to work with wisdom and strength for the progress and development of human civilization.

Wen Jiabao also explained the economic and social situation of China, saying the Chinese people have to rely on themselves to develop.

Premier Wen said China's "yesterday" was a big ancient country that created a splendid civilization and China's "today" is a country in reform, a country that is opening-up and a rising country dedicated to peace. He said he hoped China's "tomorrow" would be a major, peace-loving country with great prospects.

Wen Jiabao said he is deeply convinced that the development and improvement of China-US relations will not only serve the interests of the two peoples, but also is conducive to the peace and stability of the whole world.
