Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and US President George W. Bush agreed Tuesday that a strong relationship between the two countries is conducive to world peace and prosperity. In a short discussion after the welcoming ceremony held at the South Lawn of the White House, Bush said the United States opposes the efforts made by the leader of Taiwan to seek independence.

Premier Wen Jiabao was given a full head-of-state welcome by President Bush. After emphasising the many common interests shared by the two countries, Bush thanked China for coordinating the six-party talks on solving the DPRK nuclear stand-off.

After a short meeting following the welcoming ceremony, the two leaders briefed the press on bilateral ties, the Taiwan issue, and the views on solving the DPRK nuclear issue.

The Chinese premier started his four-day US visit on Sunday. He will travel to the eastern US coastal city of Boston Wednesday before leaving for Canada to continue his four-nation tour.
