Chinese filmmakers struck a pose at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday night, while stars of Hong Kong cinema descended on Cannes to celebrate their film industry's 100th anniversary. Taiwan born director Ang Lee also premiered his latest film.

Actress Michelle Yeoh - who has made the leap into Western cinema - was at the party, saying it was a good opportunity to catch up with friends.

Actress Michelle Yeoh said, "I just landed from Buenos Aires so I am a little in the air and you know when you are in Cannes you will continue to walk on air, so it is fantastic and we are here for the 100th celebration of Hong Kong China night so I am very excited to be here with all my friends."

Renowned film director Johnnie To also attended the party. His new movie "Vengeance" is showing in the festival's main competition.

The party - "China Night: a Celebration of 100 Years of Hong Kong Cinema" - was organized by the Hong Kong Development Council and the China Film Promotion International.

Ang Lee's newest movie "Taking Woodstock", based on one of music's best known events, made its way to Cannes Film Festival's "in competition" selection when it premiered on Saturday night.

The film portrays the beginnings of the Woodstock music festival and features performances by Demetri Martin, Emile Hirsch and Live Schreiber.

Director Ang Lee said, "I think it's a symbolic type of happening that represents the innocence, the young energy and culture change and love, peace, idealistic issues as happening in the early 60s, that's all combining Woodstock and becomes symbolic. It really plants a seed to the way we are today in some ways. I think innocence is the thing I try to recall."

Ang Lee's new film will be released in the US in August. The winning flicks of the Cannes Film Festival will be announced at the awards ceremony on Sunday, May the 24th.
