"Museums and Tourism" is the theme of this year's International Museum Day. Beijing's museums have joined the thousands of museums on all continents to celebrate ethical and sustainable tourism, showing how heritage can bring tourists and local communities together.

Museums in Beijing usually take a day off on Monday. But not today.

The Capital Museum on Chang'an Avenue opened at eight thirty A-M for International Museum Day.

Visitors had free access to the major exhibitions that tell stories of ancient Beijing.

A visitor said, "I heard on TV that Monday is Museum Day. This is the second museum that I've visited today. And there's another I'd like to go to later. "

A visitor said, "I'm a traveler from Jiangxi Province. Museums in Beijing are part of my itinerary. They have the best collections of Chinese antiques that can't be found anywhere else."

The International Council of Museums created International Museum Day in 1977 to highlight the role of museums in the development of society.

This year's occasion explores how to foster a new relationship between museums and visitors. It draws inspiration from World heritage tours and high-end museum travel. The aim is to deepen heritage awareness for sustainable tourism.

"In addition to the Capital Museum, 36 other museums in Beijing open for free to celebrate this year's International Museum Day. They hope this occasion would draw people closer to the city's cultural heritage. "
