BERLIN (TICKER) -- Argentina has yet to accept Jose Pekerman's resignation as coach of the national team.
Pekerman quit immediately after Friday's loss in penalty kicks to Germany, ending the South American side's run in the World Cup in the quarterfinals.
Despite the disappointing loss, Argentinian Football Federation president Julio Grondona was proud of his team's effort.
"No team played better than Argentina in the World Cup," he said. "Sometimes we pressed Germany back. The team showed a good level of football. We just lacked luck and ability in the final meters."
Grondona, who before the defeat had insisted he wanted Pekerman to remain in charge of the side after the tournament, also revealed he was surprised by the coach's decision.
"I did not hope for it," he said. "It is not the moment to talk about it. Nothing is finalized. I am going to think about that in Buenos Aires, when it is quieter."
