GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) -- Police reported several arrests but no fan violence Saturday following Portugal's World Cup win over England.
Tens of thousands of England fans who watched the quarterfinal game outside on large-screen TVs and in bars wandered quiet streets in shocked silence. Some England fans tried to raise cheers, many cursed, but generally they were peaceful after their team lost 3-1 on penalties after playing 120 minutes for scoreless soccer.
Gelsenkirchen Police spokesman Thomas Weise said that "several" people had been arrested, but he did not have the exact number.
At the main viewing area, about 10 fans tussled with each other briefly.
"Otherwise, it has been quiet," he said.
German, British and Portuguese police were deployed throughout the city to separate fans after the game and head off any trouble, but officers kept back.
Keeping fans apart was a strategy police used in several host cities that have hosted England, a team whose fans have a history of hooliganism.
About 70,000 English and 20,000 Portuguese fans were in Gelsenkirchen, a western mining town and one of the tournament's smallest venues.
To accommodate ticketless English fans, a British broadcast of the match was shown on a giant screen at a horse track. At the track, some devastated England fans lay on the ground others hugged each other and cried -- then filtered out peacefully.
