Italy coach Marcello Lippi expects his side to prove their critics wrong when they take on Ukraine in Friday's World Cup quarter-final in Hamburg.
Lippi has been unhappy with the accusations made regarding his team's performance in the tournament so far.
``I have read in recent days that Italian football is old, retrograde, and I feel that this is an exaggeration,'' said Lippi.
``For one year now, Europe and the rest of the world have recognised that we play a modern style of football and they said so after our opening game against Ghana.
``To say certain things after only two or three games seems an exaggeration.''
The Azzurri began the tournament with a convincing 2-0 triumph against Ghana but they soon ran into trouble having escaped with a 1-1 draw against the United States.
They did, however, finish top of Group E after a 2-0 victory over the Czech Republic.
Lippi was furious with reports suggesting Italy have been lucky so far in the tournament.
A narrow second-round victory against Australia allowed the Azzurri to progress, when an injury-time penalty conversion from Francesco Totti gave them a 1-0 triumph.
``Fortune? I have had Totti out for three months before the World Cup,'' said Lippi.
``We have had to deal with the match-fixing scandal in our nation and to make matters worse, I've had (Gianluca) Zambrotta, (Gennaro) Gattuso and (Alessandro) Nesta injured in Germany.
``I guess I have been fortunate!''
Lippi's ``luck'' continues as he will have to do without four players for the clash against the Ukrainians.
Injured defender Nesta has failed to recover, while his regular replacement Marco Materazzi must serve a one-match ban after a red card against the Australians.
Midfielder Daniele De Rossi remains suspended, while Udinese forward Vincenzo Iaquinta is struggling with a muscle injury and has been ruled out.
To make matters worse, the Azzurri have been shaken by the news of Juventus general manager Gianluca Pessotto's accident earlier this week.
The former Italy international, who played under Lippi at Juve, remains in a critical condition in a Turin hospital having fallen from a window in the club's headquarters.
Despite all the setbacks, Lippi is upbeat about his team's chances ahead of the encounter against a Ukraine side whose hopes may hinge on the performance of former AC Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko.
``It's not true that we have reached our potential limit,'' said Lippi.
``Totti has fully recovered and (forward Luca) Toni is doing well in training.
``If we win tomorrow (Friday), anything can happen.''
Meanwhile, Ukraine coach Oleg Blokhin admits his World Cup debutants have already had a great tournament - but is still hoping for a bonus in the form of a victory over Italy.
Blokhin had World Cup experience as a player with the Soviet Union but his team are competing at the highest level for the first time since Ukraine was one of the nations created by the disintegration of the former super power in 1991.
Speaking at Ukraine's base camp in Potsdam before his team travelled to Hamburg, Blokhin admitted anything that happened from now on would be a bonus for the former Soviet Republic which was a mainstay of the old CCCP (USSR) team composed largely of players from Russia and Ukraine.
``At this level of competition, every game we play is a bonus for us,'' said Blokhin, the 1975 European footballer of the year.
``But as the Brazil coach (Carlos Alberto Parreira) says the important thing is not to know how to play but to win the match at the end,'' said Blokhin, whose team has played disciplined but largely unattractive football in Germany.
Blokhin will not be able to count on injured striker Andriy Voronin for the rest of the tournament and - if he decides to field two frontmen against Italy it could be an opportunity for youngster Artem Milevskyi, whose cheeky chipped penalty contributed to the shoot-out victory over Switzerland in the last 16.
Another possibility is that Sergei Rebrov could come into the starting line-up and play behind skipper Shevchenko - the two once formed a potent pairing for their first club Dynamo Kiev.
There is better news in defence where Blokhin will again be able to call on three players who missed the match with the Swiss in Cologne.
Andriy Rusol and Vyacheslav Sviderskyi will likely return to the starting line-up after purging their suspensions while Vladimir Yezerskyi is available for selection against the Azzurri.
The victors of tomorrow's match in Hamburg will next play either hosts Germany or Argentina for a place in the final on July 9.
Blokhin may claim that everything that happens now is a bonus but before the tournament he told journalists that he believed that his team was capable of winning the World Cup.
