Italy's match-fixing trial starts, is postponed

ROME (AP) -- The sports trial involving the match-fixing scandal that has roiled Italian soccer began Thursday, then was quickly suspended until Monday when lawyers asked for more time to prepare.
Key figures from Italy's top soccer clubs have been implicated in the scandal that could result in the relegation of top Serie A teams Juventus, AC Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina to lower divisions.
Twenty-six officials -- including referees -- also face charges of match-fixing and disloyalty by a sports tribunal set up by the Italian soccer federation. The judges could strip titles, including Juventus' league championships from the past two years.
Chief judge Cesare Ruperto opened the trial Thursday by reading names of the accused to check if they were present. Ex-Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi was not, while Milan vice president Adriano Galliani -- the highest ranking Milan official involved -- sat in the front row of the improvised courtroom in Rome's Olympic stadium.
The session was then taken up by procedural matters before Ruperto adjourned when lawyers asked for more time to study documents.
"We must go straight to our objective, which is justice," said Ruperto, warning that there would be no further delays.
Moggi and former chief executive Antonio Giraudo are accused of creating a system of corruption that ranged from influencing refereeing assignments to getting players booked. The two resigned due to the scandal in May, along with the club's entire board.
On Thursday, Juventus shareholders elected a new board, including Giovanni Cobolli Gigli as president and Jean-Claude Blanc as general manager.
The federation has said it will issue verdicts before the World Cup final on July 9. Prosecutors in Naples, Rome, Parma and Turin are also conducting separate criminal probes into fraud, illegal betting and false bookkeeping, but indictments could take months.
Juventus was dealt another blow Tuesday when Gianluca Pessotto, a former player appointed as team manager in the wake of the scandal, fell from a building at the club's headquarters. Doctors treating Pessotto said Thursday it's unclear whether he'll survive.
The 35-year-old Pessotto, who is not implicated in the scandal, was in very serious but stable condition after surgery for a pelvis fracture and hemorrhaging. He was on life support and in a drug-induced coma.
Pessotto fell from a three-story building at the club's headquarters in Turin. Juventus has declined to discuss the circumstances of the fall, but Italian media reported he was holding rosary beads and landed on a car.
Pessotto -- who also played 22 times for Italy -- retired last season after 10 years with Juventus.
