I'M HUNGRY FOR GOALS
2 DAYS TO ENGLAND v PORTUGAL: WAYNE ROONEY BREAKS HIS WORLD CUP SILENCE Striker in the mood to fire England to last four
Oliver Holt Chief Sports Writer
ENGLAND'S chances of winning the World Cup walked into the room and sat down.
A hulk of a lad who was playing football like a god the last time England played Portugal in the quarter-finals of a major tournament.
A man tasked with saving England's sporting summer.
He answered questions for 20 minutes or more and we listened to every word.
Because when Wayne Rooney speaks, it's an event. Especially when it's for the first time since he broke his foot.
Especially when he carries so many of our dreams. It's our equivalent of Garbo Talks.
It wasn't really what he said yesterday afternoon that was important because he blocked every question back with a straight bat.
He has not grown comfortable with the media spotlight yet and he's the type of lad who probably never will. Given some of the off-the-field publicity he has attracted, who can blame him?
Add to that all the controversy that has accompanied his participation in this World Cup and it is hardly surprising he has quickly become one of the most guarded members of the squad.
None of that matters, though. When Rooney has a ball at his feet and an England shirt on his back, he has a voice as sweet as a nightingale's.
It was enough yesterday to be in his company and to see him full of health and caged eagerness.
He didn't want to be sitting in a room with a group of middle-aged men. He wanted to be let loose on the World Cup again.
He wanted England's quarter-final against Portugal to be today or tomorrow. He didn't want to wait until Saturday for us to let him at them.
He wasn't thinking about injury or pressure. He likes pressure. He likes big games like this. He spoke like a man bursting to make up for lost time.
"After the injury, I was just thinking about coming back and playing all the time," Rooney said.
"When there was football on the telly, it was horrible to watch. I just wanted to be back playing. Of course I'm excited about playing in the World Cup and I'd like the games to come round quicker if anything.
"You need the rest in between matches, but I just want the games to come.
"It's brilliant to be here at the tournament and when you go to the games and you see all the fans outside, the atmosphere is fantastic.
"In training, I can feel my form coming back. Every day I'm getting better.
"The more you're playing, the more you're touching the ball, the better it gets. Hopefully, by the time the Portugal game comes around, I'll be back to my best.
"I don't know how I would feel if I scored after so long out, I couldn't tell you. But hopefully I'll score soon. I'm hungry."
The rest of us are hungry, too. Hungry for England to play the way they are capable of playing before it's too late.
Hungry for a group of players we admire to shake off the lethargy that has gripped them so far and stamp their authority.
England may have survived until now despite playing below their best but they won't be able to muddle through against Portugal because, even without Deco and Costinha, Portugal are too good for that. So if we beat them, we will have played well to beat them. And then we will be in the semi-finals and suddenly everything is possible.
"We don't take too much notice of the criticism," Rooney said. "We know the job we have to do. If we keep winning I don't see a problem.
"We seem happy as a team. The fans are happy that we are winning. It's probably just the Press who are saying we are not playing well.
"We have got a lot of match-winners. Look at Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard - there are a lot who can take the game by the scruff of the neck and win it for us.
"So I don't feel the pressure any more than anybody else because this isn't a one-man team.
"I don't think the team think I will win the World Cup on my own."
Maybe not. But we've all known for a while that we can't win it without him.
He talked yesterday but it's when he plays that Rooney holds us captive like the most eloquent orator there has ever been
