No shootouts, please
June 28, 2006
Germans are renowned for their ability to triumph in penalty shootouts. Unlike England.
But England's only German-based player, midfielder Owen Hargreaves, doesn't see that much difference between the two teams when it comes to spot kicks.
"I don't think a German can take a better penalty than an Englishman," said Hargreaves, who's been at Bayern Munich since he was 16. "I can't see that. We've got dead ball specialists, some of the best in the world: Stevie G, Lamps, Becks. I fancy our chances on pens. No probs."
Apart from Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and David Beckham, Hargreaves said he would also step forward if England's quarterfinal against Portugal on Saturday went to penalties like it did at the European Championship two years ago.
England lost 6-5, with Beckham missing his kick, but Lampard and Hargreaves converting. Gerrard had been substituted for by then.
It was the fourth time in seven tournaments that England had been eliminated on spot kicks -- twice by the Germans.
UNITED NATIONS REACTION: One of the world's best-known Ghanaians, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, was diplomatic in defeat after his nation's 3-0 loss to Brazil in the World Cup on Tuesday.
"I know you are all very keen to hear what I feel about the game," Annan told reporters after the game. "First of all, let me say, 'Don't cry for Ghana."'
Appearing in the World Cup for the first time, Ghana was trying to become only the third African team to reach the quarterfinals after Senegal in 2002 and Cameroon in 1990. But Brazil proved too much for the plucky Black Stars.
Annan predicted Ghana could expect great things in 2010, when South Africa hosts the World Cup.
"This was just a coming out party, and I think tomorrow will be a different story," Annan said. "And tomorrow will be in 2010, in South Africa, on African soil."
While diplomats around the U.N. tuned into the game, Annan's morning schedule was full and he could watch only in snatches, his spokesman said.
GOALIE SINGER: Argentina goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri likes to sing. His teammates suggest he better stick to soccer.
Abbondanzieri likes to entertain the team during practices with some musical lyrics, but sometimes "it seems like he's wailing," joked midfielder Javier Mascherano.
"He insists on singing, but he has no future there," added the Corinthians player. "It's better if he keeps on being a goalie."
Abbondanzieri even sings in the mixed zone where journalists interview players after the matches.
He often stops in front of Raul Rivelo, a special correspondent for the Argentine Rock & Pop radio station, and starts to sing.
If Argentina defeats Germany on Friday in the World Cup quarterfinals in Berlin, Abbondanzieri promised to give his teammates a private concert in the locker room.
BAD OMEN?: Argentina has defeated a host team in the World Cup only once, in the 1990 semifinals in Italy, and has never won in Berlin's Olympiastadion. That might not be a good sign heading to Friday's World Cup quarterfinal match against Germany in the nation's capital.
In three matches against the host country of a World Cup, Argentina lost twice and only beat Italy in a penalty-kick shootout, after the match ended 1-1.
In the first World Cup, host Uruguay beat Argentina in the final, and in England 1966, the English won in the quarterfinals.
Argentina has lost its three matches in Olympiastadion, none of them in a World Cup: in 1979 against West Germany (2-1); in 1988 against the Soviet Union (4-2); and in 1988 against West Germany (1-0).
ANTHEM UPROAR: French players reacted angrily to fans whistling during the French national anthem prior to Tuesday's second-round World Cup match.
After French supporters respected Spain's national anthem in silence, France's players, including Lilian Thuram, looked on angrily as the "Marseillaise" was jeered.
Thuram, one of the most vocal singers on the French team during the anthem, turned his head to the right toward the hostile fans and appeared to mutter angrily.
"It's shameful to whistle during the `Marseillaise,' " said Thierry Henry. "I have rarely heard people whistling a national anthem at a football match."
Eric Abidal said the whistles and boos helped motivate the French players.
"This gave us even more desire," said Abidal. "The victory was deserved.
"As I said all along," Abidal added, "Spain is a good team ... but they don't have Zinedine Zidane."
Zidane score France's third goal in a 3-1 win. France next plays Brazil on Saturday.
