World-Wembley Rattin ball from 66 on show in Leipzig

  By Rex Gowar

LEIPZIG, June 25 (Reuters) - A sorry-looking half-deflated white football on show in Leipzig takes fans back 40 years to the 1966 World Cup quarter-final at Wembley, Antonio Rattin and Alf Ramsay's cries of "animals".

The ball has a result written on it in black ink: England 1 Argentina 0, the score that kept the host nation on course for the title and sparked a history of passionate and controversial World Cup clashes between the two countries.

It is part of an exhibition in Leipzig called "Masters of the Rules" about World Cup referees and the England 1966 section has a picture of the official in charge of that match, German Rudolf Kreitlein, a tailor by trade.

Kreitlein, his sparse hair dishevelled and a frightened look on his face, is being escorted from the Wembley pitch under police guard after members of the Argentina bench tried to attack him at the final whistle on July 23, 1966, exactly a week before England went on to beat West Germany in the final.

  REPEATEDLY ARGUING

Argentines believed they had been robbed by Kreitlein, who sent off their captain Rattin midway through the first half for repeatedly arguing with his decisions and asking for an interpreter but had committed no fouls though team mates had.

Rattin made matters worse by refusing to walk off at first, then going very slowly and also sitting on the official red carpet before gradually trundling off down the tunnel.

Striker Geoff Hurst headed home a second half winner and England manager Ramsey refused to allow his players to exchange shirts with the Argentines, whom he described as "animals".

While one legacy from that match is the passionate soccer rivalry between England and Argentina, another also had a lasting effect on the game.

Ken Aston, the referee's commissioner at that World Cup was aghast at the confusion surrounding Rattin's dismissal.

Driving home from the game afterwards he stopped at traffic lights and watching them turn from yellow to red gave him the idea for referees to show a yellow card for a booking and a red card for a dismissal which have been used ever since the World Cup in 1970.

Leipzig is where the German Football Association, DFB, was founded in 1900.
