STUTTGART (AFP) - Riot police used pepper spray and batons to prevent German football fans clashing with hundreds of English supporters gathered in central Stuttgart, witnesses said.
Around 200 baton-wielding riot police wearing body armour formed a cordon around an estimated 400 England fans as a stand-off developed with several thousand German supporters celebrating their team's World Cup win over Sweden.
An AFP photographer at the scene said police conducted baton charges and used pepper spray to disperse thousands of German fans who had exchanged taunts with English supporters.

Eight police officers on horseback were also called to the scene in an effort to head off further violence.
The situation had calmed at around 8.30 pm local time (1830 GMT) but police remained at the scene to keep the two sets of supporters apart.
More than 120 England fans were detained briefly after rampaging through Stuttgart on Friday night, although only a handful were charged with an offence.
Deputy local police chief Michael Kuehner said the firm response was meant to show that "aggressive drinking, violence and harassment will be nipped in the bud with decisive action".
"We will continue to take action against violent fans regardless of their nationality," he added.
Some 50,000 English fans are believed to be in Stuttgart ahead of their team's World Cup second round match against Ecuador on Sunday.
England's once infamous supporters were praised by police for their behaviour in their country's first two matches, in Frankfurt and Nuremberg.
But there were scuffles in Cologne following England's 2-2 draw with Sweden in their final first-round match on Wednesday, although most of the 137 rowdy fans detained there were German.
