　　MUNICH, Germany (AP) -- Sweden's most reliable striker wasn't so reliable after all.

　　With his team trailing 2-0 to Germany and down to 10 men, Henrik Larsson stepped up to take a second-half penalty that could have turned around the second-round World Cup match Saturday.

　　Instead, the 34-year-old hit the ball hard and high over the bar, wasting Sweden's best chance to get back into the game.

　　"I totally mis-hit the ball," Larsson said. "I wanted to shoot the ball in the other corner. I have no idea why I mis-hit the ball."

　　It was an uncharacteristic blunder by the veteran, who will return to former club Helsingborg to finish his career in the Swedish league.

　　Larsson helped FC Barcelona become Spanish champion this season and then set up both goals in the club's 2-1 Champions League final win over Arsenal. His big-game experience made the miss even more mystifying.

　　"I just wanted to score," Larsson said. "Unfortunately I missed it. I haven't missed a penalty in a long time. I've scored penalty shots in a more hostile environment than today."

　　With defender Teddy Lucic sent off for a second booking in the 35th minute, the penalty was crucial to Sweden's chances of getting into the quarterfinals.

　　Sweden earned the 53rd-minute kick when Larsson came down in contact with Christoph Metzelder, having taken a pass by fellow striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

　　Sweden fell behind in the fourth minute on Lukas Podolski's first goal and then trailed 2-0 after another goal by the German striker in the 12th minute.

　　"We still thought that we could do something at that point," Larsson said. "I never gave up. We just fought on. But they deserved to win."

　　Sweden captain Olof Mellberg had stressed before the match that a good start was important.

　　"Germany got off to a really good start," Sweden coach Lars Lagerback said. "I don't want to speak about the referee but he had some influence on the game. Maybe he did not stand up to the pressure. It's tough enough to play a team like Germany with 11 men, let alone with 10."

　　Larsson, playing his third World Cup, has said he will keep playing for European Championship qualifying matches if Lagerback wants him.

　　"We'll see what will happen," Larsson said.

　　Larsson scored once in four World Cup matches in Germany -- a 90th-minute equalizer in Tuesday's 2-2 against England -- making him one of five players to score in different World Cups 12 years apart. The others are Uwe Seeler, Pele, Diego Maradona and Michael Laudrup.

　　At the 1994 World Cup, Larsson scored in the third-place playoff win over Bulgaria, and then got three goals at the 2002 World Cup. His team could have done with more of his goals in this year's group games against Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago and England.

　　"We played well against Trinidad and Tobago, but didn't score," Larsson said. "We played well in beating Paraguay and also when we drew England. But we didn't have any luck today."
