Beckham optimistic ahead of do-or-die Ecuador clash

BUHLERTAL (AFP) - David Beckham came out swinging, insisting England will put their mediocre form behind them and toss Ecuador out of the World Cup.

The England captain said the side was in good shape and ultra-confident that they can make the quarter-finals despite a defensive horror show against Sweden in their last group game.

England failed to deal with set pieces against the Swedes which let them back into the match to claim a 2-2 draw.

But Beckham said it would be different against the South Americans in Stuttgart on Sunday.

"We're in very good shape, we're in the last 16, we've got no injures," he said Friday. "There is no reason not to be optimistic. We're fit and the spirits are very high."

The loss of Michael Owen to injury has created a dilemma for coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, who may revert to a 4-5-1 formation instead of 4-4-2 with Wayne Rooney on his own up front and Steven Gerrard in support.

Beckham said it didn't matter which setup was used, the players would adapt and have their noses to the grindstone against a team who impressed in their group games and will be playing the biggest match of their lives.

"I don't think it matters what formation we play. If we play well as a team and as players, whatever formation we are in we will do well," he said.

"It's not too much about formations, it's about players playing well and if we all play to our capabilities, then we will win."

One of England's biggest headaches against Sweden was their inability to deal with the aerial bombardments, but Beckham said it was simply a bad day and wouldn't happen again.

"I think at the end of the day it was just a bad day for us defensively," he said.

"Our record in past games and competitions defensively has been good. We will carry on working on it but it's not a major problem for us."

He also denied there was any extra pressure given the criticism they have taken for their performances so far, against Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago and Sweden.

"There's no added pressure, there's a huge amount of pressure on the players anyway in the last 16 of the World Cup. We're prepared for that and we can handle it," he said.

"It's a chance for us to prove to people that we can perform at this level and so far we've done well and we're happy. People have said we haven't played our best football so far, and hopefully it will come.

"We realise we can play much better football but the togetherness of the team can't be better, that's impossible. It's up to us now."
