　　England coach Sven Goran Eriksson has rubbished suggestions that David Beckham is untouchable and has claimed he would drop his captain if he felt it was for the good of the team.

　　The Swedish tactician has been criticised both in the past and in Germany for the manner in which he treats his senior players, with his relationship with Beckham under particular scrutiny.

　　It is thought in some quarters that Eriksson treats his star names with too much reverence, with the likes of Beckham beyond reproach, irrespective of their on-field performances.

　　The exciting cameo appearance from Aaron Lennon against Trinidad & Tobago has led for calls for the Tottenham starlet's inclusion against Ecuador on Sunday, but it seems Beckham, who has only been substituted once in major tournaments by Eriksson, is unlikely to be the man to make way.

　　However, Eriksson has now denied that he ever shows preferential treatment and instead claims that he would be willing to replace Beckham - if the situation called for it.

　　''Yes, of course,'' claimed Eriksson, when asked if he would replace Beckham.

　　''I'm prepared to do whatever I need to do if I see things are going wrong. Whatever is required.

　　''I am not married to him, even if you think I am. I am not even engaged to him.

　　''If I think he's not doing the job, I would take him off.

　　''It's the same with him as all the other players. He's the captain but he is treated the same as all the other players in every way.''
