　　This was a crucial match for both teams. Both know they could qualify or go out, so both started positively and went for goal.

　　When Alessandro Nesta was injured I wasn't sure whether Italy's defence would be strong enough but his replacement, Marco Materazzi, scored and that gave the whole team confidence. They knew if they drew they would qualify. The Czechs worked very hard to get an equaliser but when Jan Polak was sent off, this was a real setback.

　　In the second half they seemed to lose the will and the confidence. Italy were happy to sit on their lead until they sent on Filippo Inzaghi and he made it two.

　　By topping their group, Italy have probably avoided Brazil and I'm not sure that any of the three teams they would meet otherwise - Croatia, Australia or Japan - will be able to break down the Italian defence.

　　Every team wants to defend well and Italy are the best at that. They are in good shape, and have a lot of experience. Central defence is their strength. They still need to work hard on their offensive play, although they are picking up the pace and Francesco Totti is getting better with each game. Also, in Andrea Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso they have two very good holding midfielders.
