England coach Sven Goran Eriksson says he has no regrets over only choosing four strikers in his World Cup squad.
The Swede is upset by Michael Owen's serious knee injury but feels he has sufficient cover within his party as Steven Gerrard and Joe Cole can play in more advanced roles.
It also appears as though the manager is pinning a lot of faith in Wayne Rooney getting back to his very best in order to fire England past Ecuador and beyond in the tournament.
"It's very difficult for everyone," he said on Sky Sports News of Owen's return home. "For our team, for Newcastle and especially for Michael. For England fans and Newcastle fans.
"He will probably be away for a long time and I'm sorry for him. I told him that before he left yesterday.
"That happens in football. It's sad but that's football unfortunately."
Eriksson did not want to answer any direct questions about his line-up and tactics for the clash in Stuttgart against Ecuador.
"I don't want to talk about that at all today [Sunday's formation] but everything is possible," he stated. "I don't regret it [not bringing another striker]. I think we are covered very well.
"Rooney is getting better and better, fitter and fitter. So that's a positive thing about it. Of course, Owen, it's very sad.
"I'm very happy for Owen Hargreaves. He's been criticised for years, more or less every time he's played for England, but what you saw against Sweden is what Hargreaves can do. I'm very happy for him.
"I think I'm quite sure I picked the best squad and, of course, you can never know if a player gets injured or not - a centre half, midfielder or, in this case, a striker. Today, the situation is good, it's not good Michael is gone, but I'm not worried about the situation. Absolutely not.
"I'm sure Rooney can do whatever you ask him to do," he said of the 20-year-old starlet. "Whatever position it is, he can play. By himself alone [up front]? Of course, he can.
"The next game it's difficult to say [whether he can last 90 minutes]. I hope so but, when the match starts and during the match, we'll decide that.
"I think Rooney had an excellent 45 minutes and then dropped a little bit, which is normal, in the second half. I decided to take him out after 70 minutes and I think it was good for him. He shouldn't have played 90 minutes in that game. The next game? Who knows?
"We have more practice sessions and he's young and he's strong."
Eriksson admits Ecuador will be no push-overs in the next round at the weekend and he will ensure his players are totally prepared for a penalty shoot-out, should the need arise.
"Maybe [I'm pleased to play Ecuador]," he added. "I saw them again this morning. I don't think the real Ecuador was the one I saw against Germany.
"The real one was against Poland and Costa Rica. They rested players and had 4-5 out, including both strikers who are very good.
"It's not going to be easy - you can't expect to meet an easy team in the knockout of the World Cup.
"I would say so [knowing the penalty takers]. The problem is are they on the pitch after 90 plus 30 minutes? You never know that and have to prepare all 11 players for that, even more.
"We have to practice a lot and do it again today. We're starting practising penalties and, if it goes to a shoot-out, I hope we do better than we did in the last tournament."
