Sven-Goran Eriksson insists England's World Cup bid can survive the devastating loss of Michael Owen.
Owen's World Cup is over after a scan confirmed he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee against Sweden.
There is also understood to be some damage to the medial ligament but the cruciate injury is by far the more serious one.
He is certain to miss the start of the new Premiership season.
Newcastle refused to put a timescale on his return but this type of injury usually means at least six months out.
Owen, who has completed just one full game since breaking his foot on New Year's Eve, now faces a fight to play again this year.
England boss Eriksson said: 'Michael has had terrible luck with injuries since Christmas.
'I feel very sorry for him to miss out on the rest of the World Cup - it's blow to him and a big loss for the team.
'However I am sure Michael will work very hard to get back as quickly as possible for Newcastle and England.
'He is a true professional and a very mentally strong person.
'I hope the team can now go on and achieve success in Germany for Michael.'
Owen, 26, went for a scan today at the Max Grundig Clinic, near the team's World Cup hotel on the edge of the Black Forest.
He had been warned to expect the worst and the scan confirmed it. The striker said goodbye to his England team-mates and was due to fly home on a private jet, leaving Eriksson in south-west Germany to ponder his squad selection.
The England boss has been criticised for his decision to include only four recognised strikers in his World Cup squad.
One of those is untried teenager Theo Walcott, who has only 25 minutes of international football experience.
The 17-year-old has never played in the Premiership but may now be thrust into the intense pressure of the World Cup finals.
Eriksson said: 'Walcott is ready. It would have been good to put him on against Sweden but so many things happened and I wanted to be absolutely sure to win the group. That was our big target.
'Those weeks he has been with us he has been getting better and better, more and more confident.
'He talks more, he wants the ball more. He has scored fantastic goals in training.'
