　　GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (Ticker) - Mexico can clinch a berth in the second round of the World Cup on Wednesday.

　　Mexico (1-0-1) will face Portugal (2-0-0) for first place in Group D at Gelsenkirchen. Portugal has already earned a spot in the round of 16.

　　The Mexicans just need a tie to assure qualification to the knockout phase.

　　Angola (0-1-1) will face Iran (0-2-0) in the other Group D game at Leipzig. Angola needs Mexico to lose to still have a shot at advancing, but enters the day minus-3 in goal differential.

　　Argentina (2-0-0) has played like the best team in the World Cup thus far. The two-time champions outscored Ivory Coast and Serbia & Montenegro, 8-1, in its first two games in Group C to clinch a spot in the second round.

　　The Netherlands (2-0-0), which has also sealed a place in the second round, will play Argentina on Wednesday at Frankfurt for first place in the group. Argentina only needs to tie to earn the top spot.

　　Ivory Coast (0-2-0) plays Serbia & Montenegro (0-2-0) in the other Group C game of eliminated teams.

　　Three-time champion Germany secured first place in Group A with a dominant display on Tuesday. Miroslav Klose scored two goals to lift the Germans to a 3-0 win over Ecuador in their final group game.

　　Lukas Podolski also was on the scoresheet for Germany (3-0-0), which scored a total of eight tallies in winning its first three games of the tournament.

　　Ecuador (2-1-0) made five changes in the starting lineup and absorbed its first defeat of the tournament. But qualification to the knockout phase for the first time had already been secured.

　　England (2-0-1) will face Ecuador in the second round on Sunday. Michael Owen may not join them.

　　The English striker was stretchered off in the first minute of Tuesday's 2-2 tie with Sweden in Group B with what appeared to be a serious knee injury.
