Gerrard and England rally round Owen
Steven Gerrard insists the England team would rally behind Michael Owen after his World Cup almost certainly came to an agonising end.

Michael Owen is helped onto the stretcher
England drew 2-2 with bogeymen Sweden and will play Ecuador in the second round on Sunday in Stuttgart as Group B winners.
But the Newcastle man was stretchered off early on with what looked like a serious knee injury and he awaits the results of a scan tomorrow.
'We are not sure yet,' said Gerrard. 'He will have a scan on the injury.
'But he is really down in the there and we will need the boys to support him.'
The Liverpool man was more pleased to top the group than avoid hosts Germany in the next round.
Gerrard said: 'We were prepared for whoever we came up against in the last 16 but the most important thing was to top the group.'
He claimed they were better than in the previous games against Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago but admitted their defending from set-pieces needs working on.
Joe Cole fired England into the half-time lead with a wonder strike but Marcus Allback cancelled that out.
Gerrard looked to have ended their terrible run against the Scandinavians, who they have failed to beat since 1968, but Henrik Larsson pounced late on to deny them a long-awaited success and earn a draw.
He added: 'We played a bit better today but we were vulnerable from set pieces so we will need to sort that out on the training ground.
'We stopped passing and moving. We were trying to work hard and keep the tempo going but from the bench it looked really difficult.
'The manager wanted me to come on and inject a bit of energy into the midfield.'
Sweden, brimming with confidence, fancied their chances of beating hosts Germany in the second round.
'It will be a fantastic match. It will be absolutely great when we knock out the Germans in Munich,' striker Mattias Jonson told reporters.
'It's going to be a massive win for us.'
Jonson said his team's performance against England had given Sweden extra belief.
'England have a very strong team, they are maybe one of the strongest teams of the tournament,' he said.
Jonson added that it was not necessarily a disadvantage for Sweden to face Germany instead of Ecuador.
'We know a lot more about the Germans than about Ecuador,' he said. 'I don't know if it would be better to face Ecuador or Germany.'
Goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson said: 'We can beat them (Germany) if we play a good game. Our chances are the same as Germany's.'

Sven fears Owen's World Cup may be over
England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson fears Michael Owen's World Cup has come to a heartbreaking end.

Owen in pain on the sidelines in Cologne
Newcastle striker Owen suffered what looked like a serious knee injury in the first minute of the 2-2 draw with Sweden tonight.
Owen will now go for a scan tomorrow but, while England look forward to a second- round showdown with Ecuador and avoided in-form hosts Germany, the Swedish coach fears his most dangerous striker has played his last game of the tournament.
'Maybe (his World Cup is over),' sighed Eriksson. 'I am not sure.
'I hope he is okay but it doesn't look good.'
Steven Gerrard insists the England team would rally behind Owen after topping Group B
'We are not sure yet,' said Gerrard. 'He will have a scan on the injury.
'But he is really down in the there and we will need the boys to support him.'
Eriksson also played down Wayne Rooney's reaction to being taken off during an ineffective second period.
The Manchester United enjoyed an impressive first half but then threw his boots to the ground having been replaced by Gerrard after fading badly.
But the national coach claimed Rooney was more frustrated with himself and revealed he was withdrawn to save him from injury.
Eriksson told ITV Sport: 'I think he was more upset with himself.
'He thought that he didn't play as well as he did in the first half in the second half but he is getting better and better.
'He played longer than last time and he will get better and better but I took him, off because I couldn't risk him getting injured and play too much too early.'
Gerrard was more pleased to top the group than avoid hosts Germany in the next round, adding: 'We were prepared for whoever we came up against in the last 16 but the most important thing was to top the group.'
Eriksson added: 'It was very important that we won the group.
'We did it and didn't defend very well against set-pieces. We have to work on that for the next game but Sweden were very strong in the air.
'But we have to do that better in future. The most important thing was to win the group and I am happy about that.
'I saw the other game (Germany against Ecuador) and on paper it should be more difficulty against Germany but we have one more day to recover and we have won the group which is what we wanted to do.
'We have to play better than we did and defend better against set-pieces. That's important but normally we are good at that.
'Ecuador will play better than they did today (losing 3-0 to Germany).'
Gerrard claimed they were better than in the previous games against Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago but admitted their defending from set-pieces needs working on.

'We stopped passing and moving. We were trying to work hard and keep the tempo going but from the bench it looked really difficult.
'The manager wanted me to come on and inject a bit of energy into the midfield.'
Wayne Rooney admitted it was a relief to start for England but was devastated to lose his strike partner Michael Owen to injury.
Rooney said: 'It was nice to get back out there playing again. I think we did well in the first half but the tempo dropped a lot in the second.
'We are just happy that we came out of it as group winners.
'My fitness has never been a problem. I feel really good. I felt I could have played longer out there.
'Not getting a goal is not a problem. That will come. I am just happy that we finished top of the group.
'Losing Michael is a real blow to us. He is a very important player and we always know he will get goals.
'It's a big, big blow to have him injured but hopefully his scan will be okay. We have our fingers crossed.'

Rooney: 'I could have played for longer'
Wayne Rooney admitted it was a relief to start for England but was devastated to lose his strike partner Michael Owen to injury.
Rooney played 69 minutes of the 2-2 draw with Sweden in Cologne before he was replaced by Steven Gerrard.
It was his first start since he broke his foot playing for Manchester United at Chelsea more than seven weeks ago.
Rooney said: 'It was nice to get back out there playing again. I think we did well in the first half but the tempo dropped a lot in the second.
'We are just happy that we came out of it as group winners.
'My fitness has never been a problem. I feel really good. I felt I could have played longer out there.

'It's a big, big blow to have him injured but hopefully his scan will be okay. We have our fingers crossed.'
Owen, injured in the first minute of the game and carried on a stretcher back to the dressing room, was due to fly back to Baden-Baden with his team mates before a scan tomorrow.
Boss Sven-Goran Eriksson fears he has lost his senior striker for the rest of the competition but will know more when the team doctor analyses the scan tomorrow.
