BERLIN (AP) -- Flag-waving Germans sang and screamed their soccer team to victory Tuesday at Olympic Stadium, a joyous display of patriotism in a place still identified with Nazi-era nationalism.
Germans have generally shunned patriotic sentiment following World War II, but national pride has blossomed at this World Cup. That continued during Germany's 3-0 domination of Ecuador, what the hosts hope was a dress rehearsal for the July 9 final in the capital.
The crowd was awash in red, black and gold -- the colors of Germany's flag -- and supporters cheered "Deutschland, Deutschland."
The stadium was built by Adolf Hitler for the 1936 Olympics as a celebration of the Third Reich. There Jesse Owens won four gold medals, making a mockery of Nazi claims of Aryan supremacy.
While 100,000 spectators cheered wildly at those Games, renovations for the World Cup saw workers rip out rows of bank seating and replace them with seats, reducing the capacity to 74,000.
An oval roof covering the stands was added, but the altar-like platform built on the west end to house the Olympic cauldron remains. Beyond that is a 247-foot bell tower from which Hitler oversaw massive rallies.
On Tuesday, spectators in German-themed garb from sombreros to straw skirts and leis waved flags to celebrate goals, screamed at the referee and booed opposing players. In other words, they did what fans from other countries do.
