In Angola, a spectacular heroes' welcome is already being organised in preparation for the team's return from the FIFA World Cup?. Included in the Angolan authorities' plans is a human chain to accompany the players from the airport to the Cidadela sports centre in Lwanda, where a huge homecoming party will be laid on.

The players, however, have considerably more pressing matters currently on their minds than the reception they will receive after gaining the country's first ever FIFA World Cup point against Mexico. After that historic 0-0 draw against the North Americans, coach Luis Oliveira Goncalves did not take time out to celebrate. On the contrary, both manager and players immediately fixed their sights on the Iran game, which, far from being merely academic, could yet provide Angola with their passage to the Round of 16.

All we need is a goal

Partnered by Jamba, Angola's Kali has shone at the heart of a defence that has conceded just one goal in two matches, against Portugal in their opening fixture. When asked about his team's chances, the powerful centre-back insisted the squad were hungry for more: "We're not satisfied with just the point we got against Mexico. We think that both Portugal and Mexico will want to top the group to avoid Argentina in the next round, so they won't settle for a draw. We are the underdogs, but we'll be doing everything possible to beat Iran."

Though their chances of qualifying from Group D are considered slim ? a draw between group rivals Portugal and Mexico would see both through - Angola have a more attainable target to aim for: to score their first goal at a FIFA World Cup finals.

Joao Ricardo, the veteran goalkeeper whose outstanding performance against Mexico won him the Budweiser Man of the Match award, certainly had that target in mind when he spoke this week. "We were much better against Mexico and didn't concede," he said, "but we didn't manage to score either. I hope we've been saving all the goals for Iran."

  Akwa's wish

The Palancas Negras’ captain, 29-year-old Akwa, stated publicly before the Mexico game that he wanted a partner up front. It is no secret that Akwa, who like Joao Ricardo is currently without a club, feels the coach is adopting an overly-defensive approach, having abandoned their more familiar 4-4-2 for a prudent but so far fruitful 4-5-1 formation. "I tried to help the team as much as possible against Mexico," he said after Angola's last match, "but the truth is that I haven't had any good chances to score in these first two games."

Fortunately for Akwa, it appears that Goncalves is about to grant his wish. "Angola want to score and we don't want to go home without a goal," the coach said this week, and if Angola are to pass yet another milestone in their footballing history, a bold approach might just do the trick.
