Despite scoring only one goal in two matches, Sweden has put itself in position to reach the round of 16 at the World Cup by allowing none.
The Scandanavian country closes Group B play Tuesday at Cologne, Germany, needing only a draw against England to return to the knockout round.
The Swedes' lack of scoring can mainly be attributed to poor finishing as the trio of Henrik Larsson, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Freddie Ljungberg have failed to find the rhythm that led to them scoring 20 of Sweden's 30 goals in World Cup qualifying. On the verge of a second consecutive disappointing scoreless draw, Ljungberg gave Sweden the full three points with a header from close range in the 89th minute Thursday for a 1-0 victory over Paraguay.
"The goal was important, but not just because it was me who scored it," Ljungberg said. "We needed the three points tonight."
Sweden has totaled 16 shots on goal in its first two matches while outshooting opponents 35-22.
While a tie would clinch a spot in the second round, a win would give Sweden first place in Group B and possibly let it avoid host Germany in the round of 16. The two teams from Group B will play the two teams from Group A, which will be Germany and Ecuador.
The Swedes, though, likely will be without Ibrahimovic, who was subbed out at halftime of Thursday's match with a groin injury and is doubtful for this match.
"We did an MRI (scan) yesterday because he has some pain in his left groin," team doctor Magnus Forssblad said. "The MRI revealed a small partial muscle rupture in one of the small muscles in the groin. But he feels much better today.
"We decided to do rehab training today and tomorrow and on Tuesday we will see if we can increase training for him."
If Ibrahimovic is unable to play, Marcus Allback -- who appeared as a substitute in the first two matches -- likely would get the start up front, and Sweden coach Lars Lagerback is confident the team's depth can compensate for injuries such as this.
"You always want all players on the squad to be fit," Lagerback said. "Zlatan has been a very important player for us, but that's how it is in football. You just have to accept that if you can't play, you can't play. We have other players."
England already has clinched a spot in the knockout round, and hopes this match will serve two purposes: to get forward Wayne Rooney more match fit and end an 11-match winless streak against Sweden since a 3-1 victory May 22, 1968.
England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, a native of Sweden, already has decided he will start Rooney, who came on as a sub in the 58th minute of Thursday's 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago. The 20-year-old Rooney, fully recovered from a broken bone in his foot suffered April 29, provided an instant impact with his energy as he helped create gaps in Trinidad's defense that led to goals by Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard in the final seven minutes.
"Together with our medical staff we discussed it and they think and I think he can play more than 45 minutes," Eriksson told British network ITV on Sunday. "And if it's more than 45 minutes then it is better he starts the game than coming on."
Rooney, whose foot had been the subject of intense and seemingly endless scrutiny throughout England as the "Three Lions" chase their first World Cup title since 1966, gives Eriksson what he feels is the needed link that has been missing in attack for England from its midfielders to forwards.
"He is very important. He is a fantastic player and that type of link player between the two strikers and the midfield that we really need," Eriksson said. "We saw when he came on maybe he is not 100 percent but he kept the ball up there and did some very clever movements and clever passes so he is very important."
With Rooney starting, Eriksson likely will bench Crouch, who carries a yellow card into this match and would miss the second-round game if he was to be given a caution in this match. Teaming with Rooney also may give Michael Owen a chance to bounce back from two sub-par outings thus far.
"Of course you do. Wouldn't you?" Owen responded when asked if he was frustrated about being subbed out in both matches, which never happened to Owen in his first five-plus years on the international squad. "I've missed four months of the season ... maybe that's got something to do with it. I'm not sure.
"But as I said I'm feeling fine in training. I'm not tripping over the ball every time I get it. I'm not giving the ball away. I've had one really good chance with my head that I should have put away and that's about it."
The "Three Lions" are 0-4-7 in their last 11 matches against Sweden, including a 1-1 draw in group play during the 2002 World Cup, and the streak is beginning to be a source of irritation to the British players.
"I think it's about time we put a stop to this Sweden thing and we go out on Tuesday and get a win against them," Gerrard said Saturday. "We're really confident we can go and get three points."
