Michael Owen has sent a thinly-veiled message to Sven-Goran Eriksson - play the right way, and I will score goals in this World Cup.
Sven-Goran Eriksson's team have stuttered through the group stages with scrappy wins against Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago.
They will win Group B if they avoid defeat against Sweden on Tuesday, but Owen admits the Three Lions must raise their game.
Owen said: 'I'm not worried about scoring goals, I've done that since I was born.
'I'm not disappointed with the way I played. I could have probably been more in everyone's eye by coming short for the ball all the time but I would be doing a disservice to the team.
'I'm in the team to be in the box and if the ball is in the box and I'm not on the end of it you can blame me.
'That is where I should be, in the box scoring goals for England.'
The Newcastle striker, who has been substituted in both of England's world Cup matches, said: 'We're obviously not firing on all cylinders yet - me or the team.
'It's always difficult playing against them smaller countries who make life hard for you.
'We always tend to play our best stuff against decent sides who fancy themselves against us.
'Teams are cute. If they see they don't have as good players as the opposition then they're going to make it hard.
'You are never going to get an easy ride. We'll probably play better against better teams.
'We will have to play better. We have to raise our game.'
Owen is looking to become the first England international to score in three World Cup tournaments.
The 26-year-old must now fight for his place now that Wayne Rooney is back from injury and Eriksson must decide which of his three main strikers to leave out.
Peter Crouch has thrived as Owen has struggled. He has scored six goals in his last five England games.
Owen said: 'We've got quite a good record playing alongside each other.
'The first time we played together I scored a hat-trick and the next time I scored two against Argentina. The third time he scored a hat-trick.
'He's a lot different to me and the good thing about the squad is that all the strikers are different.
'Wayne drops in that hole, Peter's a big targetman and I'm a goalscorer. There's quite a lot of difference between us.
'Then there's Theo Walcott who has a lot of pace. We're quite different and that's a good thing.'
