　　Lionel Messi has thanked Diego Maradona for his support after a World Cup bow that fired the imagination.

　　The 18-year-old Argentina prodigy made a remarkable entrance on the biggest stage of all in the 6-0 defeat of Serbia and Montenegro.

　　Messi, who missed the last three months of Barcelona's season with a thigh injury, got one goal and made another in a 15-minute cameo after stepping off the bench.

　　In doing so he became the fifth youngest player to score in the finals - Pele heads that group. Messi, though, was quick to thank others for their contribution to his success.

　　He said: 'Diego Maradona came up to me before the match and wished me luck.

　　'That was a big lift for me, no doubt about it.

　　'I am happy to have made my World Cup debut, and, of course, because I scored.

　　'However, I want to remember the team's performance, which was very good. We have to stay calm and keep working hard.'

　　Messi joined Barcelona at 13 and made spectacular progress at each of the different age levels.

　　In May 2005 he became the youngest player to score a league goal for the senior team. And last season he was voted best player in the tournament at the Under-20 World Championships.

　　Messi's reward was an improved and extended contract which will run until 2014.

　　Argentina team-mate Juan Roman Riquelme said: 'He did well and I am pleased he feels fine. I love watching him play.'

　　Next up are Holland and coach Jose Pekerman may decide to keep Messi on the bench with the tournament still in its early stages.

　　Riquelme is confident the team can build on their superb display against Serbia.

　　He said: 'We are at a very good level. In the last World Cup we had some good games but we didn't have any luck in front of goal.

　　'Now we are putting the ball in the net.

　　'I hope that this match against Serbia does not prove to be our best game. I hope we can continue to improve.

　　'Our intention is to keep growing as a team.

　　'I imagine all the Argentinian fans, both here and back home, enjoyed our performance against Serbia. The players enjoyed it too.'
