Paul Gascoigne has urged Wayne Rooney to let his England team-mates take the strain in England's next World Cup match.
The Manchester United striker, 20, made his comeback after almost seven weeks out with a broken foot in Thursday's 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago.
As a second-half substitute, Rooney's arrival alongside fellow substitute Aaron Lennon appeared to energise England.
He may now be involved against Sweden on Tuesday, in the match which will decide whether England finish top of Group B or in second place.
In any case, England are assured of their place in the last 16, and if Rooney is given a chance to play against the Swedes, Gascoigne believes he should approach the match cautiously.
'I know from painful experience that when you return from injury you want to do everything out on that pitch, take every corner, free-kick and throw-in,' Gascoigne told the Daily Telegraph.
'I think I had to be stopped from trying to take a goal kick on one occasion - so I only hope Rooney doesn't get too carried away against Sweden, but uses the game as another step in his comeback on the road to proving what a truly great player he is.'
Gascoigne is predicting that Sven-Goran Eriksson will rest Peter Crouch for the final group game and use Rooney in tandem with Michael Owen, whose form and fitness has been the subject of concern.
Owen, only recently returned from a broken foot himself, has not made the impact England hoped he would in Germany.
Nevertheless, Gascoigne, 39, is backing the Newcastle striker to silence his critics.
'I am convinced there is nothing wrong with Owen that a goal won't put right, and if he should score against the Swedes it will present Sven with a pleasant problem of what team to send out in the next round,' said the former England midfielder.
Gascoigne was a key performer at the 1990 World Cup and 1996 European Championship, as England reach the semi-finals of both - the closest they have come to a major trophy since 1966.
However he is sceptical of whether England can enjoy such success in the coming weeks.
'When they are not playing, each and every Brazilian, Argentinian, Italian, Spaniard or whatever will be assembled around the telly watching the other games,' Gascoigne explained.
'And I have to say that what they've seen of England so far will not have worried them just yet. Hopefully, the important word there is 'yet'.'
