DEFIANT Michael Owen will NOT change his style of play — despite demands from Sven Goran Eriksson for more mobility.
England’s leading scorer is adamant he will continue to ply his trade in the penalty area during the World Cup.
And he has made it clear he will not be made the scapegoat for the team’s less-than-impressive performances against Paraguay and Trinidad.
Owen was hauled off after just 55 minutes of England’s opening Group B game and lasted only 58 minutes of Thursday’s encounter before being replaced by Wayne Rooney.
Now he has hit back at boss Eriksson’s pre-match claim that the poor movement of the forwards is largely responsible for the Three Lions’ problems.
The Newcastle striker said: “If the team isn’t playing well, then I’m not getting chances and I’ll probably be the quietest man on the pitch.
“But I’m not going to start dropping deeper for the short ball all the time just for the sake of it, to catch people’s eye and get my name in the papers.
“That would be doing a disservice to the team.
