　　Soccer, soccer everywhere -- some Germans seek escape from ubiquitous World Cup

　　BERLIN (AP) -- The World Cup that has brought pure joy to millions of soccer-crazed Germans makes Asima Gilani miserable.

　　Forget avoiding streets full of raucous drunks and flag-waving throngs -- even her friends don't want to talk about anything but the tournament. And it lasts a month.

　　"I find this World Cup so annoying," Gilani said, as nearly 24 million of her compatriots watched the German team beat Poland. "I can't stand it."

　　If soccer haters like Gilani look hard enough, they can find their escape. Some spas are offering packages for World Cup widows and a few brave restaurants are promising not to show games.

　　Gilani found one in Berlin -- a downtown lounge that seats up to 100 but had only about 15 customers. Businesses might not get rich off the anti-soccer minority.

　　Still, at least 50 restaurants, bars and beer gardens across Germany have declared themselves soccer free, according to Stephan Barbarino, a theater director from Munich who launched a Web page listing the businesses and selling merchandise featuring a crossed-out ball logo.

　　"I don't despise soccer," Barbarino said. "But I really felt that I needed to create a counterbalance to the soccer craze."

　　The posters he offers that businesses can post to advertise they're not broadcasting games haven't been hot sellers.

　　"Most places also don't want to appear hostile to the fans that come to Germany from all over the world," Barbarino said.

　　So some businesses suggest it's Germans who travel.

　　The eastern German state of Brandenburg launched a Web site listing destinations for vacationers who want to get away from it all.

　　One offer is a "girlfriends package" aimed at women who want a break from their World Cup-fanatic husbands or boyfriends. A two-night stay for $238 per person at a resort town 75 miles south of Berlin includes a day in the beauty spa.

　　"Unfortunately, we've only had two women here yet and so far we have only one more reservation for the rest of the World Cup," said Christiane Martin, owner of the Seehotel in the town of Burg im Spreewald.

　　Ahead of the World Cup, Berliners seemed skeptical. More than a quarter of respondents in a poll conducted for the newspaper Berliner Zeitung said they wanted to avoid the tournament whenever they could.

　　Two opening victories for Germany seem to have changed that.

　　Less than a week into the tournament, 62 percent of Germans are excited to host the competition, 26 percent are indifferent and only 12 percent are annoyed, according to a poll for the news channel n-tv. The poll, which had 1,001 respondents, was released Wednesday. No margin of error was provided.

　　Salvatore Sigismondo, a bartender at Berlin's trendy Greenwich Bar, said he was annoyed his boss has decided to stick with a decision not to set up a television.

　　On Tuesday, he worked seven hours until 3 a.m. and had only five guests -- English fans who walked in by mistake and fled after one drink.

　　"We might as well close," he said. "We have no business at all and without the tips I am making hardly enough money this month to pay all my bills."
