By Mark Ledsom BAD BERTRICH, Germany, June 15 (Reuters) - Switzerland will wait until next week to decide if injured defender Valon Behrami should remain with the World Cup squad.

Team doctors told reporters on Thursday afternoon that Behrami could be sent home early because of a groin injury that has plagued the player since the start of Switzerland's World Cup preparations.

An MRI scan conducted later in the day has since given the team cause for more hope.

"Today's scan confirmed that there has been at least no worsening of the injury," Swiss team spokesman Pierre Benoit told reporters.

"Behrami will undergo further tests and will not train with the team for the next two or three days, but there will no be final decision until next week."

  INFLAMED MUSCLE

Team doctor Roland Grossen said Behrami appeared to be suffering from an inflamed adductor muscle, preventing him from running properly or kicking the ball.

Grossen also confirmed that the Swiss had considered axing Behrami from the squad before their opening Group G game against France, at which point the Swiss could still have brought in a replacement.

"We talked about it, but the extent of the injury was not clear and rightly or wrongly we decided he should stay," Grossen said.

If Behrami is not able to shake off the injury, Switzerland are likely to find themselves struggling for options on the right side of defence.

Regular right-back Philipp Degen looked out of his depth for large parts of Tuesday's 0-0 draw with France and was himself forced to limp around for the last 10 minutes after bruising his foot after Switzerland had used up all their substitutes.

Degen was given the all-clear by doctors on Wednesday, however, and is set to start Switzerland's next Group G match, against Togo, on Monday.

Switzerland's final group game comes against South Korea on June 23.
