Some players and coaches want the World Cup fields to be watered more.
The Netherlands and France both complained that the pitches they played on during their opening matches were too dry for skillful soccer to flourish. FIFA said Wednesday it had not received a formal complaint yet and planned no action.
"In the opinion of our (experts), the grass is in good condition," organizing committee spokesman Gerd Graus said.
Not according to Netherlands striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who said his lackluster play during the 1-0 victory over Serbia-Montenegro was partly caused by the Leipzig field.
"It gave me a lot of problems. The playing field was so rough, it made me stumble over the ball," he said.
Teammate Giovanni van Bronckhorst echoed his complaints.
While the Netherlands complained after winning, France did in the wake of a disappointing draw.
Striker Thierry Henry said the Stuttgart pitch where France was held to a 0-0 draw by Switzerland had not been properly prepared.
"The ball was getting stuck under the player's feet all the time," Henry said. "Then I saw them watering the pitch after the match. What's the point of that?"
Even Switzerland coach Koebi Kuhn sympathized with France.
"It had been watered, but it didn't do much good," Kuhn said. "The ball did some strange things. It was certainly not an advantage for the attacking team. Looking at it from this angle, the state of the field could be considered a disadvantage for France."
Graus said the local groundskeepers were following strict World Cup protocols.
"There's clear rules about when the grass can be watered, when it can be mowed and to what height," Graus said.
United States coach Bruce Arena thought the field needed water when the U.S. lost to the Czech Republic 3-0 on Tuesday.
"We recommended to FIFA to water the field," he said. "When you make a recommendation, they're going to ignore you. The field was sticky, players were slipping. The field was a little hard. But the field should be watered because it's a little humid and it's sticky out there. If they put some water on the field, it will resolve a lot of those problems."
