World-South Koreans take to street for massive party

SEOUL, June 13 (Reuters) - More than a million South Koreans took to the streets on Tuesday to dance, bang drums and cheer their team to a 2-1 win over Togo in their first World Cup game.

About 360,000 South Koreans jammed the streets of downtown Seoul, near City Hall, for a party that started four hours before the match with a concert of the country's top pop music stars and ended with fireworks to celebrate the victory.

Crowds dressed in the national team colour of red gathered to watch the game on big screen TVs at stadiums, squares in big cities, ports at remote islands and a horse race track.

"This is a great party. I'll be here for the next match," said fan Lee Yoo-mi, an office worker who watched the game in downtown Seoul.

Many in the country are hoping for a repeat of 2002 when co-hosts South Korea went to the semi-finals.

"We are going to the next round after we beat France and Switzerland," said fan Jung Joo-hyung in Seoul.

Hundreds of thousands of the supporters, dubbed the Red Devils, wore plastic red horns equipped with lights, creating a sea of red dots that swayed with the emotion of the game.

South Korea even gave its prisoners a break by allowing them to stay up later then usual and watch the game at correctional facilities across the country.

Universities in Seoul set up big screen TVs so students could put down their books and watch the game on campus.

An hour after the game, people were still dancing in the streets of Seoul, shouting out cheers in support of their team in Germany.

"I am so excited. I watched the game in a bar in Seoul with my friends. Everyone got free alcohol, said Laura Pohl, 30-year old photographer. (With additional reporting by Kim So-young and Oh Jung-hwa)
