World-Big screen ban in London after brawl

LONDON, June 12 (Reuters) - Authorities at London's Canary Wharf financial district have banned the screening of World Cup football matches on large outdoor screens after violence broke out at the weekend during England's first match.

Canary Wharf, home to some of the world's biggest banks, had planned to beam live matches to thousands of fans on several giant screens throughout the tournament in Germany.

But several people were injured in a brawl on Saturday involving 200 fans during a broadcast of England's first World Cup match against Paraguay, police said.

"Following the incidents which occurred during the screening of the England v Paraguay World Cup match on Saturday, June 10 in Canada Square Park, Canary Wharf Group has decided that there will be no further screenings of World Cup football outside on the estate," Canary Wharf Group (CWG), which manages the district, said in a statement.

The ban will remain for the whole tournament, it said. However, the screens will be used for broadcasting tennis matches from Wimbledon later in June and July.

People suffered head and facial injuries after the fight broke out during the second half of the match, witnesses said. Press reports said six people were treated for cuts from flying glass and beer bottles.

The screens, including one outside Reuters Plc head office and another installed by the BBC, were shut down as police restored order.

"Although ... a small group of troublemakers spoilt this free event for the vast majority, in order to protect the safety of the public CWG will not tolerate this kind of behaviour at Canary Wharf," the group added.

Businesses at Canary Wharf had mixed reactions.
