SVEN GORAN ERIKSSON will have disappeared into the sunset long before the war over Wayne Rooney’s broken foot comes to an end.

Bullish Eriksson wants Rooney in the team because he believes he is vital to England winning the World Cup.

He said: “I am doing this in the best interests of Rooney, the England team and 40 million England fans. I am responsible for it.”

Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson simply does not accept Rooney is fit enough — and is ready to sue if his star striker returns home injured.

The fact top orthopaedic surgeon Professor Angus Wallace felt unable to give a finite decision on Rooney’s toe until the FA agreed to indemnify him against liability indicates the lengths England will go to in order to ensure their star player figures in this World Cup.

Wallace even took it upon himself to lecture Rooney on the importance of getting properly fit before he plays and advised him to wear special inner soles to help with his balance.

But Eriksson has taken control and is going full-steam ahead, whatever the medics and Fergie think.

The acrimony does not stop there. Manchester United chief executive David Gill and his FA counterpart Brian Barwick have had a spectacular falling out during a four-way conference call also involving Eriksson and Fergie in which the air turned blue.

Eriksson is leaving his £5m-a-year job this summer, which is perhaps why he has taken on Ferguson so strongly. But Fergie will not let this one lie, whether Eriksson is there or not.

New national boss Steve McClaren can expect a rough ride from his former gaffer when he takes command.

Central to the whole argument is Prof Wallace, from The Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham.

Both sides agreed before the scan that Prof Wallace would act as an independent adjudicator.

But each side then chose to interpret his findings differently.

United say Wallace advised Rooney not to play any of the group games and said he must be carefully monitored after that.

Their statement said: “The expert independent medical view is that Wayne has a good chance of being fit after the group stage.”
