　　MANCHESTER (AFP) - England star Wayne Rooney has undergone a make-or-break scan on his injured right foot that will determine whether he plays in the World Cup.

　　After a flight on a private jet from England's base in southern Germany to Manchester, Rooney was whisked to the Whalley Range private hospital for the crucial X-ray on his broken metatarsal.

　　England's most important player was driven into the hospital in a blacked-out Silver Mercedes people carrier just before mid-day and emerged 25 minutes later.

　　Rooney was accompanied by the England team's Swedish doctor, Leif Sward, for an examination that he expects to result in a green light to play in Germany.

　　The forward has been training and kicking a football since the end of last week and his lusty approach to England's workouts have triggered a surge in optimism that the 20-year-old Manchester United star will be given the all-clear to play.

　　On Tuesday, Rooney told reporters at England's training camp near Baden Baden that he was anticipating good news.

　　"It feels fine," he said of his injured foot after his first public training session since he suffered the injury playing against Chelsea on April 29.

　　Sward was due to meet United counterpart Tony Gill to discuss the results of the scan, which were expected to be made public later in the day.

　　United manager Alex Ferguson has consistently played down Rooney's chances of taking part in the World Cup and is reported to have been furious at the positive bulletins reporting from the England camp.

　　Ferguson is concerned that Rooney might come under pressure to play when not fully fit, and fears a risk of further injury to the club's star player if he is rushed back for the World Cup too soon.

　　England and United have reportedly agreed that a FIFA-appointed doctor would have the final say on Rooney's fitness if there was any dispute over the interpretation of the results of the scan.

　　United reportedly believe Rooney should only be allowed to return to Germany if the scan indicates he could play in the second round while Eriksson has said he would keep Rooney even if he were only available for the final on July 9.

　　Eriksson said Tuesday he remained confident Rooney would be passed fit to rejoin the squad.

　　"I think he looks very good - but let the surgeons and the specialists have their say," said Eriksson.

　　"Very soon we will know what is going to happen about him but I have always said I think he will be ready."

　　If Rooney is ruled out, his place will be taken by Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe, who is with the England squad in Germany but will return home in the event of his team-mate being cleared to play.

　　England must finalise their 23-man squad by 1500 GMT on Friday, 24 hours before their opening group game against Paraguay.
