SOCA WARRIORS SIZZLE ON PUBLIC DAY IN ROTENBERG
Trinidad and Tobago head coach Leo Beenhakker has hinted that he has his starting eleven already for Saturday’s Group B opening fixture against Sweden and he intends to get the best out of his “Soca Warriors” as they commence their historic campaign in Germany.
The day of public relations activities was a fulfilling one for Beenhakker and his men as a crowd of 3,300 turned up at the training pitch for the team’s first official open session which saw the players play a eleven v eleven for just under 40 minutes. With the sounds of T&T Soca playing on the PA System, the players then split into groups of two to sign autographs and pose for photos with fans who had lined the pitch some two hours before the session started at 5pm. On the opposite end, a second batch of players were in the mix zone facing the media and the proceedings which was coordinated by TTFF Media was so smoothly done that FIFA media officer Rob de Leede applauded the team for their showing after dinner at the Landhaus Wachtelhof hotel.
“This was so professionally done that we even had reporters praising you for doing things the way it happened and they were saying it was even better than seeing a Brazil open session. You guys have done exceptionally well and if you can take that type of effort and commitment into your games then there’s no reason why you won’t get into the second round,” de Leede said.
After the session ended close to 7pm, the players were escorted back to the hotel by bus and Beenhakker was then accompanied by Press Officer Shaun Fuentes and de Leede to the media conference which saw Fuentes taking charge alongside the Beenhakker. For Fuentes, it was also the first time having to conduct such an event on the World Cup stage and facing the big guns of the international media.
The conference went for just over 40 minutes and Beenhakker was in bubbly mood as he had the media practically enjoying the conference.
“Yes I know my team for the first game and I have decided since last week and I have also decided on the position of Dwight Yorke. He has to play from the midfield up front and not as a target man anymore,” Beenhakker promptly responded when asked about his first team and the role of Dwight Yorke.
“They know who will start, I don't have to tell them, and they are not stupid," he added.
“All they have to do is work out who is wearing which bib in training. But if you ask me (then) sorry but I have no bibs, so I can't let you work it out," he added causing the room toe erupt in laughter.
He said that leading T&T to the World Cup was definitely a highlight in his career.
“It was also a personal victory for Wim and myself, the most important feeling for myself was that it’s so amazing with just playing some football matches and being a little bit successful you ca change a whole society, from that moment on we qualified it was all football. It’s a fantastic feeling that you have when you can make 1.5 million and that makes you happy.
It was a great experience because when we started it was almost a mission impossible. At the same time for us it was a big challenge.
“Sometimes we have a certain arrogance that they are playing a football only in Holland. No. They are playing in Germany and other parts of the world,” he responded to why he took the job if he felt it was mission impossible.
Admitting that the pace of the game was different in Europe, he added that his team will make up in other ways for what they may lack in playing ability.
“We have a team that will play the matches with a smile, they will play with a lot of courage and pride to defend the colours of their country. They are a real, real, real team, they are dying for each other. So in that way sometimes in football in relation to the opponent, you can compensate what you are missing, and in that way we have the same hope and ambition to do the same job as the other countries.”
“Our situation was very complicated because some of our players had a very tough season in England and Scotland and coming with different luggage, some who were not playing and then some playing in the MLS and the local League
“It was not an easy job but we did what we could do I think and in that way everybody is prepared. You can understand that it’s an absolute dream for all these players who never were on such a big event to be here and in that way everybody is counting the hours and the days to start next Saturday versus Sweden.”
