　　WAYNE Rooney rejoined the England squad in Germany last night after being cleared to play in the World Cup — and declared: “The big man’s back in town.”

　　The 20-year-old ace made the rousing remark to FA top brass as he marched back into the side’s hotel.

　　It followed a whirlwind visit to a Manchester hospital — where a vital scan revealed significant improvement to his broken foot.

　　Rooney stepped off the return flight at 10pm last night and was driven to the hotel.

　　Waiting FA chiefs had formed a welcoming committee. And as the smiling striker strode through the lobby, a BBC Radio Five Live crew heard his confident statement to them.

　　One guest at the Schlosshotel Buhlerhohe said: “Wayne really looked over the moon — and so did all the backroom staff who were there. If he can take that attitude on to the pitch then England must have a great chance.”

　　Earlier, Rooney’s smile had given the game away as he emerged from Manchester’s Whalley Range Bupa hospital at 7.49pm. Jubilant England coach Sven Goran Eriksson declared: “It’s good news.”

　　And although there was no official FA announcement, FIFA’s website declared just after 9pm: “England have been boosted by news that Wayne Rooney will be fit to play some part in Germany 2006.”

　　After a fraught day, Manchester United confirmed last night: “Wayne has a good chance of being fit after the group stage.”

　　Rooney appeared to have his right leg strapped as he climbed the steps of a jet to Germany at Manchester Airport last night.
