  By SHAUN CUSTIS

JOHN TERRY feared he would miss the World Cup after a hefty clash with his own Chelsea team-mate Wayne Bridge.

Bridge clattered into Terry at England’s training camp near Baden Baden on Tuesday and left the Blues skipper limping in pain.

For one horrible moment Terry thought it was all over and his dream was in ruins.

Having missed out on selection for 2002 the central defender wondered if there was a World Cup curse on him.

Fortunately it turned out to be no more serious than a whack he was eventually able to run off.

But it gave him the jitters so close to the big kick-off.

A relieved Terry admitted: “Your World Cup can go in one tackle.

“It’s a plus the way we train, which is so competitive, but when he caught me on the ankle I thought for a few minutes ‘Oh s**t! I’m struggling here and I could be on the way home’.

“Thankfully after a few minutes I was back on my feet and running it off.

“The thing is, training is so sharp. When the coach Sammy Lee gave a corner we’d be swearing at him and going mad.

“None of the lads want to lose and that’s a great feeling.

“It’s an English thing. I was speaking to the other players and it’s what we all get at club level every day.

“It’s what Chelsea training is like and the same at Man U and Liverpool.

“That’s the tempo we set. When the foreign players come in they have to raise it a bit.

“You just can’t go easy. If you start pulling out of tackles in training you do get hurt.

"And if you let other people get there before you then when it comes to the game situation, you will be hesitant.

“When I come away from training I don’t just leave, get on the bus and get back to the hotel. I come away thinking about what I’ve done, the work I’ve done and the work I need to improve on.”

The intensity of training reflects the winning mentality running through the squad.
