Sir Bobby Robson feels Wayne Rooney will miss out completely on the World Cup - but the former England manager hopes to be proved wrong.
The brilliant Manchester United striker is set to have another scan on his fractured fourth metatarsal on June 7, a date brought forward by his club after a request from the Football Association.
The FA should then be able to decide whether or not the 20-year-old will be able to feature in the World Cup before the tournament begins, which will give them time to name a replacement if necessary.
Rooney suffered the injury when falling awkwardly in a game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on April 29.
And former England boss Robson feels there is just not enough healing time to allow the player to return at his brilliant best.
"The history of it says no. For him to recover in six weeks is asking a lot," Robson said.
"First of all, he is going to be out of footballing condition, he cannot do any stamina, endurance or sprint work.
"If he is right, he has then only got two weeks to get super-fit to play World Cup football.
"I hope that I am completely wrong, because we all love him, he is a genius and a great, great player who makes a difference.
"But I just cannot see it, not in six weeks."
However, Robson admitted: "I think you have to believe a little miracle can happen, and keeping him in the squad is good for harmony and bonding."
Robson, 73, guided England to the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup in Italy, when a certain young Paul Gascoigne emerged as the star of the tournament.
Arsenal teenager Theo Walcott, 17, became England's youngest international when he was introduced during the second half of Tuesday night's 3-1 win over Hungary.
Veteran coach Robson, though, feels it was something of a gamble to include the former Southampton trainee, who has yet to play in the first team for Arsenal.
Robson declared: "He is inexperienced, totally.
"I have never seen him play, but I understand he is very talented and exceptionally quick.
"However, he has no Premiership experience at all.
"At international level, it is about how you get into the game, and he has not mastered that art yet - he cannot have because he is 17, but he will do."
Robson added: "I hope that I am wrong and if he comes on he just does the trick for us.
"It is a risk, and there are a couple of players who dutifully fought all season in the Premiership and who in my opinion would be a bit more reliable than Walcott.
"It is a very brave decision, but I hope it is not a foolhardy one."
Crouch hopes his choreography will be a lift for Owen
The tall striker was called up to be used mostly as an impact substitute but now looks a starting option
