Ashley Cole has no doubt England's teenage sensation Theo Walcott can have a major impact at this summer's World Cup.
Walcott eclipsed Wayne Rooney as the youngest player in England history on Tuesday, coming on as a second-half substitute against Hungary at the tender age of just 17 years and 75 days.
For coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, it represented a remarkable show of faith in a player who has yet to make a single first-team appearance for Arsenal since he signed from Southampton during the January transfer window.
However, after watching Walcott perform at close quarters during Gunners' training sessions, Cole needs no convincing of the youngster's potential and feels England have a rare gem in their midst.
"I have seen Theo more than most in training and I know exactly how good he is," said the full-back.
"He is only 17 and before he came into the England camp only really myself and Sol Campbell had seen him but when he came on against Hungary he looked as though he had been there for years.
"He has shown great promise so far, but now, in a match situation, he has shown he can mix it with the big boys.
"He has proved how sharp and effective he can be and if he does get another chance, he will definitely take it."
Even though Eriksson is still experimenting with his formation, with Wayne Rooney likely to play only a minor role in the World Cup - if any - Walcott could quite easily find himself called off the bench in Saturday's final friendly with Jamaica and also during a Group B programme which pitches England into combat with Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago and Sweden.
Cole is a certain starter too now he is fully recovered from the broken foot which ruled him out of virtually three-quarters of the domestic campaign.
The defender, whose future with Arsenal remains open to debate, admits he has endured some frustrating times this term as he watched the Gunners struggle to make an impact in the Premiership.
However, he suspects he could now feel the benefit of his lengthy absence, particularly as his foot is now fully healed and capable of resisting the heavy knocks he took in the Hungary win.
"My foot is fine now," he said.
"I am getting fitter with every game and, while I would prefer not to get any knocks at all, it is better to get kicked on the foot now and have a chance to recover than for it to happen during the World Cup.
"It has been a hard season. It is not easy watching your team-mates go out and play when you cannot be a part of it.
"It feels as though I have a lot to prove and a lot to offer.
"I am really hungry to play and feel as a team, we can go to Germany with a lot of confidence and belief that we are going to win it."
