Ghana triumph over South Korea in Scotland

  by Martin Stirling

  June 4, 2006

EDINBURGH (AFP) - Ghana notched an impressive 3-1 victory over 2002 World Cup semi-finalists South Korea, continuing their successful build-up to this year's tournament.

Asamoah Gyan's first-half penalty and second-half goals from Sulley Muntari and Michael Essien gave Ratomir Dujkovic's side a confidence-boosting win, with South Korea briefly back on level terms through Lee Eul-Yong shortly after the break.

Ghana, ranked number 48 in the world rankings, had settled into the game quicker, appearing faster and more comfortable on the ball than the South Koreans, who are listed 19 places higher in 29th place.

The first shot on goal, however, did not arrive until the 17th minute when Ghana's Chelsea midfielder Essien beat his marker on the edge of the 18-yard box before firing in a right-foot effort which South Korea goalkeeper Lee Woon-Jae parried away for a corner.

In the 37th minute Ghana deservedly took the lead from the penalty spot, Gyan rifling into the top corner to give Lee no chance.

Six minutes into the second-half the South Koreans were back on level terms after a sensational strike by Lee.

The midfielder picked up the ball midway inside the Ghanaian half and, as the defenders continued to back off, he smashed in a powerful left-foot shot from 25 yards.

This equaliser did not dampen the spirits of the Ghanaians and in the 63rd minute they regained their lead after winning a free-kick just inside the South Korean half.

Essien took the kick and played a fantastic swerving ball towards Muntari who rose majestically to head the ball into the corner of the net from 12-yards.

Dick Advocaat's South Korea were rocked at going behind again and they almost lost another in the 69th minute when great link-up play between Matthew Amoah and Gyan created a chance for Essien from 16 yards.

The Chelsea star showed great skill to cut inside his marker but with only the keeper to beat he blazed over.

But in the 81st minute Essien made amends when he played a one-two with Gyan on the touchline before sending the keeper the wrong way with a low left-foot shot from six-yards to complete the victory.

It was Ghana's last preparation game before they face Italy, the Czech Republic and the USA in World Cup Group E.

South Korea, meanwhile, will need to show a marked improvement before taking on France, Switzerland and Togo in Group G if they wish to progress to the second stage.
