  It's a dream

  By NEIL CUSTIS

AARON LENNON admits he is still pinching himself at being in the England squad.

As understudy to David Beckham, his chance of seeing action in Germany is limited.

But that does not matter to a player who, early in the season, could not even get into his club side.

Lennon said: “I’m still trying to come to terms with the fact I’m here, part of the England squad.

“I wasn’t even in the Tottenham side at the start of the season so it has all happened very quickly.

“I wouldn’t say I’m in the squad to put pressure on David Beckham. He’s one of our best players and the England captain, so I’d say I’m here to provide cover for him.

“All I can do is prepare as well as I can and make sure that if an opportunity to come on arrives, I’m ready for it.

“Beckham is a great captain and I am learning from him.”

But Lennon is some player to have on the bench.

He proved that in the B international against Belarus and when he came on for Beckham against Jamaica on Saturday. His speed and trickery can inject life into a team and a game.

Against tiring defences, he feels his pace could be a major asset if Sven Goran Eriksson requires a more direct option off the bench.

Lennon said: “I can be an impact player coming off the bench. That’s my role.

“You have to look at these things realistically and David is going to start the games.

  squad.

The skipper said: “He’s young but he deserves his place.

“He’s totally the opposite kind of player to me.

“He’s got lightning pace and he’s a great dribbler. I’m more of a crosser.”

The expectation and pressure is now building with England’s first Group B game against Paraguay on Saturday. Yet the 19-year-old Spurs winger insists he is not suffering from nerves.

He believes he has Theo Walcott to thank for that, with the attention off him and on Arsenal’s 17-year-old whizkid.

He said: “I don’t get nervous and that helps me.

“When I play football you can’t worry about nerves so I’m not scared of anything.

“There hasn’t been that much pressure on me because Theo has taken the spotlight.

“There is normally a young player who shines at a World Cup and maybe that can be me, we’ll just have to wait and see.

“It’s gone well for me so far against Belarus and Jamaica.

“There are a lot of good, young, talented players out there. I’ll do whatever job the manager asks of me.”

Lennon’s inclusion in Eriksson’s squad came at the expense of Chelsea’s Shaun Wright-Phillips.

While Wright-Phillips has had a limited role at Chelsea, Lennon’s influence at White Hart Lane has grown by the game.
