LONDON (AFP) - World Cup games that will be shown on BBC television will also be available live and free-to-air to British Internet users at the same time, the London-based broadcaster announced.
"We know a lot of online viewing is done in the office, so we suspect this will allow people both to do their job and to keep up with the very latest action from Germany," said BBC director of sport, Roger Mosey.
Games in the tournament, which starts on June 9, are to be televised by both the BBC and British commercial broadcaster ITV.
The Internet deal means all of the BBC's games in the group stages will be shown, including England's opener on June 10 against Paraguay, plus the corporation's rights to those fixtures in the knock-out stages.
The BBC has exclusive rights to England's second-round and quarter-final games should they reach that stage.
Coverage -- on bbc.co.uk/worldcup and bbc.co.uk/sport -- will be identical to that shown on terrestrial television with the same commentary. Four-minute clips from all of the 64 matches will also be available.
The BBC has broadcast football over the Internet before but not on the same scale. In 2005, it showed the final of the FIFA Club World Championships in Japan between Liverpool and Sao Paolo online to British Internet users.
Live tennis action from five courts will be available online from the Wimbledon championships later this month.
