Former England boss Sir Bobby Robson feels The Three Lions lacked the hunger to trouble the leading pretenders in Germany.
England, predictably some might say, crashed out of the World Cup at the quarter final stage when they lost a penalty shoot-out to Portugal.
Outgoing incumbent Sven Goran Eriksson has received his fair share of criticism for England's tepid performances but Robson feels the players must also take responsibility.
While England began the tournament widely backed to do well, in reality, their major performers such as Frank Lampard and David Beckham failed to ever find top form.
"I think we needed a bit of hunger to want to win,'' he told 5 Live's Sportsweek. ''That was, in some cases, lacking.
"I saw Germany last night and they weren't going to finish fourth, I tell you.
"They finished third - they would have liked to have finished first.
"I don't think some of our players played to their maximum potential. We didn't play it like we play in our league, for instance, with a good tempo and highly competitive and running forward and playing forward passes - clever passes - to front people.''
While critical of England's players, Robson also feels Eriksson's tactics were not up to the standard required on the highest stage, of the opinion that to operate with a lone striker was a mistake.
"We played with one striker sometimes where we needed to play with two strikers,'' he added.
"You have only got to look at Germany. They were almost the only team in the tournament, apart from maybe Argentina, who actually played with two strikers.
"We have a lot to learn, and let's hope the future is bright under Steve McClaren."
