BERLIN (AFP) - Zinedine Zidane was noticeable by his absence after failing to keep an expected date in front of the world's media on the eve of the World Cup final against Italy.
Coach Raymond Domenech insisted there was nothing sinister about the French legend's absence which will inevitably disappoint his public eager to hear from the great man's own mouth his feelings as he approaches his final appearance for his country.
Zidane has only appeared once in public during the competition before their opener against Switzerland.
Domenech, called upon to defend his captain's silence, said: "I can understand why he didn't come.
"Like with all the players he doesn't feel the need to explain what he's doing, he just wants to get on and do it.
"He's intent on preparing for the final and sticking to the objective.
"All the players are preparing in their own bubble. They suffered so much from criticism after the last World Cup. They're in their fortress that they've built up around them to keep the group together.
"Until the match is over they'll be inside this vacuum."
He played down the significance of this final being the last page of Zidane's glittering career.
"It's Zidane's last match but don't forget it will be the last match for other players too (including Lilian Thuram and Fabian Barthez). They're all in the same situation."
He insisted he was approaching the biggest game of his life in the same way as he had done for all of France's matches leading up to the final.
"This is a match like all the others, I'm sticking to my focus. I'm not listening or reading anything about the World Cup, it's been like that for the past month.
"If you start looking left and right you can get overtaken by psychosis. I've been there, I don't need this outside pressure.
"There were seven matches in our project, tomorrow's game is the seventh. I'm in the same state of mind as before all our other matches, we have to perform. I'm not treating this game as a final but a game that we've got to win in order to go on holiday afterwards with peace of mind."
Domenech as per normal declined to divulge his side but he reported no fitness concerns with the only change coming among the substitutes with Manchester United's Louis Saha suspended.
"All the players are fit," he reported.
Asked if he would be assembling the same team that beat Portugal 1-0 in Wednesday's semi-final he smiled: "No, and perhaps.
"No because one player is suspended and perhaps because we've got a training session later and I have to wait and see after that."
With that Domenech, who turned up at the press conference late having forgotten his accreditation, left to supervise France's final behind closed doors training session.
That was switched to a nearby ground after a request by FIFA to ensure the pitch at the Olympic stadium is in the best possible condition for this first all-European final in 24 years.
