  Portugal v France: Preview

Portugal full-back Miguel concedes that Luiz Felipe Scolari's side are rated the underdogs for the match with Raymond Domenech's France on Wednesday.

But, rather than travel on Thursday to Stuttgart for a third-place play-off, Miguel believes that the Portuguese could go to the capital for a final meeting on Sunday with either Italy or Germany.

``I don't want to appear over-confident but I want to say that we can beat France because our squad is capable of doing so,'' said Miguel yesterday as the Portuguese players prepared to leave the Hotel Klosterpforte for the last time.

Portugal have had gruelling knockout matches with Holland and England but Miguel is confident that they can still go head to head with a France team that has been inspired by the soon-to-retire Zinedine Zidane.

He added: ``The last two games have been enormously tiring but I can guarantee we are prepared for Wednesday's match, which will be very difficult.''

It is 40 years since Portugal, then inspired by tournament top scorer Eusebio, reached a World Cup semi-final and that, Miguel believes, will give his team an extra dose of energy.

He said: ``It's a long time since Portugal reached this round of a World Cup so our desire will help us overcome any tiredness. This is a very special moment for us, and all the Portuguese people, so we don't want to disappoint them and ourselves.

``We have reached this round, we know our worth. On Wednesday we have to do our best so our consciences rest well even if things go against us.''

Miguel, who last season played with Valencia, has been linked with AC Milan and Barcelona but insists he has tunnel vision - the tunnel in question being the one at Berlin's Olympic Stadium that will stage Sunday's final.

``I know there have been things in the paper but at this moment it's the least important thing,'' said the full-back.

``We are with the national team and all that is on our minds is to get to the World Cup final. I am only thinking of the World Cup and, while it's good to know that people are interested, at the moment I don't want to know.''

Portugal must do without the suspended Petit against France but can welcome back Deco and Costinha who both missed the quarter-final victory over England.

The last time Lilian Thuram played in a World Cup semi-final he scored the only two goals of his record-breaking career for the France national team.

But in Wednesday's last-four clash with Portugal, the 34-year-old he insists he merely intends to ``scare'' the opposition.

In the final Group G match with Togo, Thuram eclipsed Marcel Desailly's previous French record of 116 caps for Les Bleus but the Guadeloupe-born defender has struck only twice in his 119 appearances.

However, those goals could hardly have been better timed as France, for the only time in the tournament, trailed to Croatia 1-0 in the semi-final eight years ago before Thuram twice found the target to put his side into the final with Brazil.

The rest, as they say, is history with France marching on to win the title, but Thuram's `goals scored' column still reads two as he continues to accumulate caps.

``(In the quarter-final with Brazil) I started going up for free-kicks,'' said Thuram, reflecting on the 1-0 win over the outgoing world champions in the previous round last weekend.

``It came from the team discussing things - they asked me to start going up but there was no chance of me scoring - I only went up there to scare them.''

Thuram believes the match with Portugal will be tougher than the Brazil game even though the Portuguese, uniquely among the semi-finalists, have never played in a World Cup final.

``They (Portugal) have been very good in defence and have hardly conceded any goals,'' said Thuram. ``It will be very difficult and harder than Brazil.

``It will be a close match because a place in the World Cup final is at stake and no-one will want to take unnecessary risks but I think the game will be played in good spirit.

``Since we started the World Cup the team has continued to get better as the tournament has progressed match after match and we must hope that trend continues against Portugal.''

Hailing the French team spirit, Thuram said: ``You know that when a team plays en bloc that that is the key to success, whether you are a club or a national side.

``If everyone respects that rule you have a team that helps each other but sometimes players don't make the effort.''

Six French players would miss the final if booked against Portugal, but Domenech is expected to field the same team that defeated Brazil and Spain.
