Scolari's Strategy List
July 4, 2006
MARIENFELD, Germany (AP) -- Some examples of how Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari puts The Art of War into practice:
-- The Art of War: "All warfare is based on deception."

Twice Scolari has sought to bluff his adversaries about his team. In Portugal's opener against Angola, he said midfield mastermind Deco should be ready to play despite an injury. Deco never appeared. On the eve of a quarterfinal game against England, Scolari insisted he didn't know whether Cristiano Ronaldo would be available after a thigh injury. Ronaldo played 120 minutes.
-- The Art of War: "He will win whose army is animated by the same spirit throughout all its ranks."
Goalie Ricardo said: "We have faith in ourselves. We're like a family."
-- The Art of War: "The Commander stands for the virtues of wisdom, sincerity, benevolence, courage and strictness."
Ricardo said: "He has a huge heart, but when he doesn't like something he says so."
-- The Art of War: "The consummate leader cultivates the moral law, strictly adheres to method and discipline."
Despite criticism of their foul play against the Dutch, in that game Portuguese players saw their first red cards in more than three years under Scolari.
-- The Art of War: "The general who thoroughly understands the advantages that accompany variation of tactics knows how to handle his troops."
When Portugal was heading for defeat against England at the 2004 European Championship Scolari played a master stroke by taking off veteran Luis Figo and bringing on untested youngster Helder Postiga. The striker headed in an equalizer in the dying minutes.
-- The Art of War: "Thus the energy developed by good fighting men is as the momentum of a round stone rolled down a mountain thousands of feet in height."
Scolari is on a 19-game unbeaten run with Portugal and is eyeing becoming the only coach to win the World Cup title twice with different teams. He won it with his native Brazil four years ago.
