Serbian football coach confirms exit

BELGRADE (AFP) - lija Petkovic has confirmed that he is giving up his post as Serbia's football coach after his team's humiliating exit from the World Cup.
"My contract with the (Serbian Football) Association expired today and I cease to be coach," Petkovic said Tuesday.
"For three years, I was looking for players that would beat Argentina, but there were no such ones here, or there were but I did not know how to find them," he said in his first press conference since the team returned from Germany.
Serbia-Montenegro were eliminated from the World Cup with the worst record in the group stage of the competition, having lost 1-0 to the Netherlands, 6-0 at the hands of Argentina and 3-2 to Ivory Coast.
The team has since been broken up between the two former Yugoslav republics of Serbia and Montenegro after the latter gained independence following a referendum last month.
Petkovic, who accepted sole responsibility for the Argentine drubbing, said another reason for the team's failure at the World Cup tournament was numerous injuries.
Though the Serbs arrived on the back of a successful qualifying competition, where they saw off Spain to top the group and conceded just one goal, their campaign in Germany was also riven by internal disputes.
