Ronaldo expresses wish to join Real Madrid

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo has announced he wants to leave the club and join Real Madrid, according to reports in Spain.

Madrid will elect a new president on Sunday, and the 21-year-old is reported to have welcomed an approach by representatives of candidate Juan Miguel Villar Mir aimed at persuading him to join the Spanish giants.

Spanish daily sports newspaper Marca quotes Ronaldo as saying: 'I have told my agent that I would like to leave.

'I want to do so in the best way possible. I want to play for Madrid and I dream about it.'

The Portugal star, who expects to have recovered from injury to face England in the World Cup quarter-final in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday, is contracted to United until 2010.

But, according to the report, he is said to have been impressed by Villar Mir, a 74-year-old lawyer, who would appoint rally driver Carlos Sainz as his vice-president if he wins the election.

Ronaldo reportedly said: 'I have gone with Villar Mir's project because it is serious and follows correct procedures.

'They have explained to me their plans and the next step is they will talk to Manchester United to open negotiations.

'Other candidates wanted me to sign a document which is not legal. Villar Mir has promised me he will talk to the club and all we have done is talk through an agent.' Marca claims Madrid would offer the player a four-year contract.

Ronaldo joined United from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 for £12.25million.

Although they have not spoken to Ronaldo about the reported comments, United remain relaxed about the situation, aware that reports of this kind surface regularly when Madrid are in the process of conducting their presidential elections.

'Cristiano only signed a new contract last season which committed his future to Manchester United until 2010,' said a club spokesman.

'We have no reason to believe he will not honour it.'
